No More Barriers

from Only One Life by peter zeldow

about

In a songwriting class I took with Steve Dawson at the Old Town School of Folk Music, we were given a list of random words and challenged to use as many as possible. Words such as engulf, barriers, uncanny, enumerate. We were also instructed to use a descending bass line. And from those unpromising beginnings arose what, to me, is one of my most intimate songs. lyrics

I would engulf you if I could
I know it's irresponsible but just the same
Desire makes me want to take you
Where no more barriers remain

It's an uncanny state
Dare I enumerate

The ways that I intend to love you
Now all seem plausible but just the same
Something must change

Everything has changed

The delivery is understated, but the storytelling packs an emotional wallop that rewards careful listening. ... more
