Words and Music

about

Not a trace of irony in this song. Simply an homage to making music with friends. I remember my excitement, while I was writing the chorus, when I came up with the Gene Clark kind of chord change that gives this song a bit of musical out-of-the-ordinariness. And then, ending the song on an Asus2 chord instead of resolving to the tonic. The pleasures of songwriting!

lyrics

There's nothing so beautiful as voices in song
In close harmony and affection
When the words and the music connect to your soul
It's as close as we get to perfection

There's nothing so pure as that high lonesome sound
With no traces of amplification
And nothing so sweet as the birth of a song
In that strange moment of its creation

There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be
Then with you surrounded by the sound
Of the songs that we love, as we chase our destiny
Is there anything else more profound?

There's nothing so fine as two guitars in perfect tune
When each string vibrates in union with its neighbor
And nothing brings more comfort than an old country song
At the end of a day of your labor

There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be
Then with you surrounded by the sound
Of Fire and Rain and Mystery Train
Is there anything else more profound?

There's nothing so beautiful as voices in song
In close harmony and affection
When the words and the music connect to your soul
It's as close as we get to perfection

about

peter zeldow Chicago, Illinois

Songs that hover around folk, rock & country genres with a mostly gentle, acoustic guitar-based mid-60s sound. The themes are universal: love (Jerome, You Are True), loss (Go), desire (Hunger), memory (It All Comes Back), aging (Golden Years), empathy (Kindness), & gratitude (Grateful). The delivery is understated, but the storytelling packs an emotional wallop that rewards careful listening. ... more
